Billu Barber Movie Review
[Bollywood-February 2009]

I can’t believe that I’m saying this after so long but Billu Barber was an awesome movie! I actually really loved it. This, however, doesn’t happen often. I can’t say I was impressed by the film industry in 2008 but I must say like many others that I have high hopes for 2009. If you haven’t already seen it, you must. Sadly and strangely it wasn’t playing in my area. What can I say, that’s how New England is. The people here just don’t have brains. They play dumb movies like Dostana but they can’t play a Shahrukh Khan movie like Billu Barber.

So coming back to the point…yes…Billu Barber stars Shahrukh Khan and if you don’t already know it was made by his production company Red Chillies Entertainment, produced by none other than his wife Gauri Khan and obviously choreographed by Farah Khan. The trio seems to take great pride in their team.

What makes the movie so great? It’s funny, entertaining, a bit emotional, and all around Indian! Billu, played by Irrfan Khan, is a poor barber who lives in a small village with his wife, Lara Dutta, and their two children and struggles to make a living. His children are brats, he can’t pay their school fees, his barber shop is practically ancient but nonetheless he lives a simple and you might even say peaceful living.

Billu’s life takes a huge turn when movie star Sahir Khan, played by Shahrukh Khan, comes to his village to shoot his new movie there. This is where we see the big catastrophe that fall upon Billu. Somehow, the whole village comes to know that Billu is friends with Sahir Khan and they all want to be nice to him so that he will introduce them to him. Even the principal waives his children’s fees. Everyone suddenly loves Billu but annoys him at the same time! Much to their disappointment he is unable to set up meetings with Sahir Khan for them. Billu’s now simple life is now turned hectic.

Throughout the film we see “Sahir’s movie accomplishments” such as posters of his movies and movie clips but these are all actually Shahrukh Khan movies. Makes you think, is Shahrukh trying to show off. No, that’s just how Indian movies are and he’s just giving people what they want. Really! In the dance sequences we see glimpses of Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, and Deepika Padukone. Sahir Khan has more security than the president. His fans are more dedicated and crazier than anyone’s fans in real life. Ultimately, we see the ideal Indian movie fantasy world!

Is Billu really friends with Sahir Khan? If he is, will Sahir Khan even remember him? Will he even get to meet Sahir Khan?

Watch the movie to find out!
