Online Eid Shopping

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Eid shopping just isn’t the same if you do it online. I always prefer to go shopping in person for my Eid clothes. That, however, is not always possible for everyone. Depending on where you live you may or may not have access to Indian shops in your area. Even if you do they can often be of no use to you if they don’t have enough variety. You may not find your size or their selection might be outdated.

This is when resorting to online shopping can be a great solution, or not! Honestly, there are very few trusted sites out there. I’ve ordered from many of them. Sometimes you will get scammed. Other times you will have a great experience but when you order again they will try to take your money and you’ll never get the product. It can really be a hassle. It’s especially frustrating if you don’t get your outfit in time for Eid or the occasion you are ordering for! Then you have to deal with disputes, trying to get your money back, or trying to get them to ship you the item. Even if you do receive the item it may be messed up. Most of the time they won’t even take it back and if they do agree to they won’t pay for the return shipping even if it is their fault! So in the end, only shop online if you absolutely have no choice. If you’re sure about your size try to order readymade so you get the clothes faster. Be very careful so you’re not the victim of fraud!

What’s the Point

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

I have always wondered what’s the point of doing something if you don’t do it right. I mean it’s not what you do it’s whether or not you are good at it. Whatever you may choose you have to be successful in that direction. I think the same goes for clothes. If something doesn’t look good on you and it doesn’t suit you then you shouldn’t wear it. For example, it’s popular to pair tunics with tights. However, not everyone can pull this look off. If you’re not exactly skinny the tights can show your legs and make you look bigger than you are or actually reveal your size. Not everything suits everyone. People should learn that it is first imperative whether something looks good on you or not. Whether or not it’s in style comes second.

Trends come and go and right now we are going through times when there is quite a broad range of styles to choose from so this makes it especially crucial that one chooses something that particularly suits them and looks good on them. No one wants to look fat or stupid right?

What Will You Wear on Eid?

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Whenever someone asks me this question I am thinking of the color of my outfit. However, many people answer “clothes.” Very funny…but now all jokes aside what type of outfit will you wear and do you think there is any popular color for this Eid or season? Do you prefer saris or salwar kameez? Some believe Eid outfits should be simple and for those believers out there I just have one question…why? What’s wrong with dressing up on our religious holiday?

Rapid Changes

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Fashion changes so quickly and rapidly that it’s some times hard to keep up. You know when a new style comes out and you fall in love with it so you buy tons of new outfits in that style and you can’t wait to wear all of them or at least get to wear them while they’re still “in” right? That’s always exciting but what happens if you don’t get to wear your all your new outfits and then new trends start coming in? They just get showed to the back of your closet. This is worse for those who live in areas where they can’t easily buy South Asian clothes. Those people just have to plan ahead and stock up so it’s not always easy. It’s easier when you live in a city where there are a great number of shops where you can get your shopping done. What do you do when something is no longer in style? Do you just throw it out/get rid of it or do you put it in the back of your closet and wait till it’s back in again?

Fashion’s Cheapest Finds

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Everyone knows Indian clothes are expensive. Even the plain cotton ones. However, I’ve recently found some steal deals. Instead of keeping them a secret I’ll share. You can find cute tops like fancy kurtis between $10-$20 easily. If you’re paying any more than you’re over paying! Pair them with matching leggings for around $8 or $10 and you’ve got yourself an outfit. The leggings, available at most Indian stores, look like churidars and are very comfortable. A great choice over the traditional salwar kameez.

Eid Colors

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Popular colors for this Eid are green and red. I know what you’re thinking “Christmasy” but just think about it. These are important colors in Islam too, green especially and red goes well with it.

Try to incorporate one of these colors into your outfit this year or opt for a combination of both!

Elegance with a Price Tag

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Why does everything always come with a price on it? Whether you want quality, craftsmanship, genuineness, or even tradition; they all come with a price! The last topic on ghararas got me thinking…they’re so expensive no wonder no one wears them anymore! Sure, all Indian clothes are expensive…especially in the West, however, some are outrageously over priced! Ghararas are hard to find too. If ghararas only come in fancy wear then its obvious why their price tags are such but even everyday clothes are an added expense. Polyester is cheaper than cotton but who wants even a second of it in these hot summer months? Additionally, everyone claims that the salwar kameez or anarkali they are wearing is silk but chances are its probably not!

Most outfits are made with synthetic fabric and machine instead of hand embroidered and they are still so expensive that you don’t think of looking for the authentic fabrics. That’s one of the problems with readymade outfits. Saris, on the other hand, are great quality and craftsmanship for the price you pay. You can get an authentic pure silk sari and sure you’ll pay the price but at least it’s worth it. What’s better than getting your money’s worth. That’s always a better choice than paying an arm and a leg for cheap synthetics. Unfortunately, we don’t always have a choice.

Sari Comments

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I absolutely HATE how people always seem to make a comment when I’m wearing a sari. As if it’s some kind of ball gown or something! The sari is everyday wear in India. It is not some sort of formal dress. Just as some women choose the salwar kameez as their every day dress; others choose the sari. It makes no difference and it is not some kind of a big deal. Why is this so hard to understand??

Online Shopping

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

What do you think of online shopping? I’ve been adopting this shopping method recently instead of the traditional shopping in stores. Especially, for Indian clothes. Sometimes it’s not possible to find what you’re looking for in your area. Therefore, many of us have to resort to online shopping whether by choice or not.

Online shopping definitely has its good and bad sides. There is a lot of variety online. Especially, for saris. Not so much for anarkalis. The bad side is that what you see is not what you always get. For example, I ordered a sari online recently which appeared to be a combination of light pink and purple. When I got it, in fact, this was not the case. The sari was pink but not purple. It was dark pink. It’s pretty but not what I imagined.

Another down side is fabric. You don’t always get the fabric you want. Same happened with me. As for the price, it really depends. Sometimes you can find a great price on the internet. Sometimes they are overpriced. It’s difficult to spend a huge amount online because you’re not sure what you’re getting yourself into.

The sizing isn’t always the best either. Ordering clothes online is always a risk but especially with Indian websites because they don’t always offer returns and exchanges. I’ve found some great stuff online though and would love to order again in the future.

Practical Saris

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

I’m sitting here wondering why people tend to think that saris are impractical and that they won’t be worn like let’s say for instance salwar kameez. Now this is so not trure. Millions of women in India wear saris every single day and have been doing so for ages. There is nothing more practical and comfortable than a sari. It’s so unique and free flowing. Very versatile in its drapes and styles. Practically available in everything from cotton to silk and everything in between. Then why is it that people say saris are “hard” to wear. Or, that they are uncomfortable. The worst one I hear, is that they’re “reserved” for special occasions. I don’t think so.

Just take pants, for example. The come in many shapes and forms. Just as jeans are for everyday wear and nice slacks for more formal occasions. The same goes for saris. There are formal saris made from pure silk and covered in embroidery and then there are plain cottons. Lately, the sari has really made a comeback. There was a time, some decades ago, when women “ditched” the sari for a more “comfortable” salwar kameez, especially for those women who went to work outside the home. Then of course, came the business suits, even for women in India. Things have changed once again and many women…even in the West, are wearing saris to work! Surprised? Don’t be. Who says saris are immpractical? If you don’t want to wear them that’s one thing but that doesn’t make the outfit itself unsensible!

Did Salwars Replace the Sari??

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

It may be widely justified that some decades ago women stopped wearing saris and opted in for the more “comfortable” salwar kameez. Who ever gave them the idea that a sari is not comfortable? Thousands of women, in India, have always worn saris and continue to do so quite comfortably. However, this urge to wear salwars was perhaps associated with the women working outside of the home movement. Yes, this brought huge change and with it the loss of traditional values and fundamentals. Salwar kameez, originally only worn by the people of Punjab and surrounding Northern areas, has now become the most common part of any woman’s wardrobe. The question yet to be answered is has it replaced the sari? Ofcourse not! It has not replaced the sari so much as empowered it or become more common. Perhaps for casual wear it is justifiable to say that it has, in fact, replaced the sari but only in certain age groups. Lifestyles have changed and with it fashion has always evolved. The true charm and gracefullness of a sari can never be replaced by the dull and boring salwar kameez!
